Kia India has recently filed a new trademark for the name “Clavis.” Reports suggest this could be for a new car, possibly for the micro-SUV segment. If true, it will share aplenty with the Hyundai Exter and go on to rival the likes of Tata Punch and Maruti Fronx. With a four-year-long presence in India, Kia is currently the fifth-largest carmaker. Its success is driven by popular models such as Seltos, Sonet, and Carens. Now, the carmaker is working on a new model (internal codename – AY) that will be available in both ICE and EV formats.

Kia Calvis to Offer ICE and EV Variants
While it’s not for sure if the Kia AY will receive the Clavis nameplate, we do have some information on this upcoming compact car. Aesthetically, the new model will have a boxy silhouette. With short overhangs, large greenhouse and high roof, focus will be on optimising the interior space. This is something that will make the car unlike the Kia Sonet. It’s noteworthy that the latter is often criticised for somewhat cramped rear.
The micro-SUV will be available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine. Peak power and torque should be in the region of 82 PS and 115 Nm, respectively. Kia could even offer a CNG version, a first for any of its local cars. Meanwhile, an EV version will make the Clavis among the most affordable electric cars. Our sources inform us that the driving range will be higher than the 465 km from Nexon EV. That should attract those with range anxiety to finally switch to an electric car. Meanwhile, the ICE engines should get optional AMT, another first for a Kia.

Direct Rival to Upcoming Hyundai Exter EV and Tata Punch EV
In terms of pricing, the ICE could cost Rs. 7 to 11 lakh (ex, showroom). On the other hand, safely expect the electric version to cost fairly more. Our guess is it would have a sticker price of Rs. 12 to 14 lakhs. However, in spite of a higher cost than the ICE version, the Calvis would still become one of the most affordable electric cars around. The Kia Calvis will rival a range of models. While its ICE versions will compete with everything from a Maruti Fronx to the Tata Punch, its EV version will take on the upcoming electric versions of the Punch and Exter. Of course, it will even lock horns with the low-selling Citroen C3 as well as the e-C3.
