In New Zealand, Kia Carnival has gone through a vertical crash test which is the ultimate of all. See if the MPV passes the test or not.
Kia Carnival has received a 5-star safety rating in the ANCAP crash tests, however, it was the 2016 model. The one in India is very similar to the global-spec MPV only with the differences seen in engines and gearbox. For the New Zealand market, Kia has given an ultimate safety demonstration of the Carnival.
So, Kia Carnival has to go through this vertical crash test, which is unheard by most. From a height of 12.6 metres or 42 feet, the Carnival is put on a vertical surface. This is definitely done with the help of a crane. Anyhow, the degree is a flat 90 which means there is no curve. So, let’s see how it does.

Once the wheels touch the surface, the MPV is released for the test. The speed at the time of the impact is 56 km/hr which is technically lower than the regular crash test speed. The car crashes and you can clearly see that it has not received much of an impact. The bonnet and bumpers have been damaged but the crumple zones have absorbed most of the impact.
The safety zone on the platform takes care of the passengers so that the impact does not reach to their legs. The components seem really well built as the damage has been limited just to the bonnet. The airbags have come up in time as well. Even the latest model uses the same platform and components with differences in styling, features and engines.
The India-spec Kia Carnival comes with a 2.2 Litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 200 PS and 440 Nm of peak torque, while mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. In the global markets, it also gets a petrol engine including a 3.3 Litre V6 that produces 276 BHP and 336 Nm of torque.
