Jeep entered the Indian car market with three really expensive products – Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT and Wrangler Unlimited. While these three do have a strong appeal and enough going for them, Jeep requires to launch a mainstream model to get sufficient volumes in India. No surprise then, that, the manufacturer is about the launch the Compass SUV to India. The Compass will not only become the most affordable Jeep SUV in India, but will also compete, directly or indirectly, with some well established models. One such rival could be the very successful Mahindra XUV500. We have decided to compare the two SUVs here to find out how these two compare against each other. So read on for our Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 comparison

Mahindra XUV500* | ₹ 12.2 lakh – 18.68 Lakh |

Okay, going by our estimates, the two won’t have a price overlap to speak of. However, we’re sure that at least some prospective buyers of the top-end XUV500 would want to instead check out the entry-level Compass owing to the latter being a world class model. Also, prices of the Compass aren’t out yet and who knows, Jeep might pull a surprise by pricing the Compass really aggressively and into the XUV territory. Fingers crossed!

Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 – Specifications Comparison
Specifications | Jeep Compass | Mahindra XUV500 |
Engine | 1.4-litre turbo petrol/2.0-litre turbo diesel | 2.2-litre turbo diesel |
Power | 160 BHP/170 BHP | 140 BHP |
250 Nm/350 Nm | 330 Nm | |
Transmission | 6-speed MT or 7-speed AT/6-speed MT | 6-speed MT or 6-speed AT |
The Compass is now on sale with two engine options – a 1.4-litre Turbo Petrol and a 2.0-litre Turbo Diesel. In comparison, the XUV500 is available with only a 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel engine. Even if we compare the Diesel engines only, the Compass has a clear advantage here. In spite of having a lower displacement, the Compass offers much more power and torque. It will offer a 9-speed automatic transmission option in the near future. In comparison, the XUV’s auto ‘box has just 6 cogs.

Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 – Mileage Comparison
Model | Mileage (petrol) | Mileage (diesel) |
Jeep Compass | 13-14 KMPL (MT)/12-13 KMPL (AT) (estimated) | 17.1 KMPL (4×2)/16.3 KMPL (4×4) (ARAI) |
Mahindra XUV500 | – | 14 KMPL (MT)/14 KMPL (AT) |
Thanks to a smaller, more efficient Diesel engine, the Compass is clearly more frugal in comparison to the XUV. When the Compass diesel is equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, expect its mileage figure to go up.
Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 – Dimensions
Dimensions | Jeep Compass | Mahindra XUV500 |
Length (mm) | 4,420 mm | 4,585 mm |
Width (mm) | 1,820 mm | 1,890 mm |
Height (mm) | 1,650 mm | 1,785 mm |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2,640 mm | 2,700 mm |
Quite obviously, the XUV500 has larger dimensions than the Compass. From its length to width, wheelbase to even height, the XUV is superior in every aspect here. No wonder then, that, it also ends up offering 7 seats in comparison to the 5 seats the Compass offers. Basically, these two models, being indirect rivals, differ greatly in this aspect. While the XUV offers oodles of space with seating capacity of 7 people, the Compass offers only 5 seats but tries to make up for less space by offering higher quality materials and a richer cabin.
Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 – Exterior Design Comparison
The Compass looks chic, modern and masculine. It has the typical Jeep face and in many ways, comes across as a baby brother to the Grand Cherokee. For a small SUV, the Compass has just the right ingredients. Its design oozes enough boldness with a touch of sportiness. The latter is due to the short overhangs and compact dimensions. The Compass looks butch and sophisticated. Bits like the wraparound taillamps add sleekness to the design. Basically, the entire car looks really good.
The XUV500, on the other hand, comes from the ‘big-is-beautiful’ school of thought. It misses out on the sophistication of the Compass. Also, it doesn’t even feel as modern to look at. Still, it manages to hold its own by offering a muscular exterior design that has some bold creases to catch your attention. Bits like flared wheel arches add enough masculinity to the design. The LED DRLs lend a slight touch of premimum-ness.
Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 – Interior Design Comparison
The interior of the Compass is a pretty nice place to be in. It is made of high quality materials and taking the centrestage on the dashboard is the 7-inch UConnect system. The centre console offers many well-placed buttons. The Compass gets a sporty three-spoke steering wheel. The steering wheel has a thick rim, which should make it good for use at all times. A highlight is the Selec-Terrain drive mode selector which occupies a good amount of space ahead of the gear shifter. All in all, the interior of this car looks quite good.
In comparison, the XUV500’s interior offers a lot more space and even more seats. The plastic is of decent quality, but it really can’t match the Compass in this aspect. Even the XUV gets many features, but fails to feel as premium as the Compass. Still, those looking for a spacious SUV should choose the XUV over the Compass.
Jeep Compass vs Mahindra XUV500 – Verdict
Price- The XUV500 might have a price advantage here, but the Compass is not priced too high. In fact, its price, which starts from Rs 14.95 lakh, is something buyers will pay to own a Jeep.
Specifications – The Compass’ engines have more power and torque. Also, the Compass offers a petrol engine option. Moreover, the Compass will offer a 9-speed automatic transmission with its diesel engine. To the XUV’s credit, it has an optional AWD system that makes it pretty good off the road. However, so does the Compass with its diesel engine too.
Mileage – The Compass is not only more powerful, but also offer a higher mileage. This is due to the lower displacement of the engine and a lighter kerb weight.
Dimensions – While the XUV is a fully blown 7-seater SUV, the Compass is a small SUV with just 5 seats. The XUV is much bigger than the Compass.
Design – Even in terms of design, the two cars are as different as they can possibly get. While the Compass impresses with its compact, modern and sufficiently muscular looks, the XUV’s big and bold exterior is quick to catch attention.
