An Auto Expo 2018 launch for the Jeep Compass diesel automatic seems likely. We think this car would have come to India alongside the rest of the Compass models but perhaps Jeep wants to test the market and its acceptance for diesel engine-automatic gearbox combinations. While a later launch date for the Jeep Compass diesel automatic will help the company tune the auto gearbox as per Indian conditions, it will also the company in creating some space in the car’s model lineup for diesel-auto gearbox-equipped Compass.

Jeep Compass Diesel Automatic Specifications

The Jeep Compass Diesel Automatic will come equipped with a 2.0-litre MultiJet II Turbo Diesel engine. This engine has a peak power output of 170BHP and a peak torque output of 350Nm. The automatic gearbox on offer will likely be a 9-speed torque converter unit from ZF. This transmission has a torque handling range between 280Nm and 480Nm. Equipping the Compass diesel automatic with a 9-speed automatic gearbox will help it deliver higher fuel economy than manual gearbox-equipped models. The Compass will likely be the first car in its segment to come with a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

Again, the biggest gains the Jeep Compass diesel automatic will provide is in the area of mileage. We estimate a mileage of 20.8 KMPL from the 4×2 Jeep Compass diesel automatic, which is up from 17.1 KMPL offered by its diesel manual cousin.The 4×4 Jeep Compass diesel automatic is likely to deliver a mileage of 19.6 KMPL, up from 16.3 KMPL offered by 4×4 diesel manual. If such gains do result, then Jeep Compass diesel automatic will make for a good purchase proposition upon launch.

Don’t expect the automatic Jeep Compass to be different from the one currently on sale. After all, all the changes to the Compass, to give it a new automatic gearbox, have been made under the skin.
