The latest Mahindra BE 6e is in the news again, but not for the reasons you might be thinking
In a strange turn of events, Indigo sues Mahindra for using the ‘BE’ nomenclature in its latest electric vehicle portfolio. I must admit it is not every day that we see such a conflict between an airline and a passenger carmaker. In any case, Mahindra recently launched its new breed of electric SUVs – XEV 9e and BE 6e. Going forward, Mahindra will launch its EVs under two new electric sub-brands – XEV and BE. These will use Mahindra’s scalable and modular INGLO platform which will even spawn many upcoming EVs. For now, let us take a look at the details of this case.
Indigo Sues Mahindra for Using ‘BE’
The news report has been going viral on social media. IndiGo Airlines’ parent company, InterGlobe Aviation has initiated a trademark infringement case against Mahindra for using ‘BE’ branding for the electric coupe SUV. It feels like there will be confusion with IndiGo’s airline code. Even though it might seem evident that the two are totally different to confuse anyone, IndiGlobe has decided to pursue this case.
To this, Mahindra replied, “Mahindra revealed its electric origin SUVs the BE 6e and XEV 9e on November 26, 2024. Mahindra has applied for trade mark registration under class 12 (vehicles) for โBE 6eโ a part of its electric origin SUV portfolio. We hence donโt see a conflict as Mahindraโs mark is โBE 6e,โ not the standalone โ6E.โ It differs fundamentally from Indigoโs โ6E,โ which represents an airline, eliminating any risk of confusion. The distinct styling further emphasizes their uniqueness.ย We have taken on board the concerns that InterGlobe Aviation Limited have to infringement of their goodwill, which was not our intention. We are engaged in discussions with them to find an amicable solution.”
My View
Now it is a bit strange for an aviation firm to sue an automotive player since the two belong to completely different industries. Moreover, as Mahindra said, the BE 6e is not a standalone product. The nomenclature extends to the entire lineup of the new-age EVs from the Indian auto giant. Hence, it becomes a bit difficult to find depth in IndiGo’s claim. In any case, we shall have to wait for the official announcement from these companies regarding what they decide to do going forward. I am sure an amicable solution will be found.
