Going for aftermarket oversized alloy wheels is often the easiest route to alter the very appearance of any car significantly. However, it has its disadvantages too.
This has to be the first Maruti Swift in the country with colossal 20-inch aftermarket alloys. People often head to the aftermarket car modification houses to customize the appearance of their cars. However, I must mention that most car modifications are illegal in India. If you are tinkering with the natural settings of any car, you will be fined by the traffic Police. Apart from that, installing large alloys on cars can even offer some mechanical and performance disadvantages. Let us dive into the details of this case.
First Maruti Swift with 20-inch Alloys
The details of this instance stem from the Tarun Vlogs3445 channel on YouTube. In this video, the vlogger explains the specifics of this heavily modified hatchback. He went for the base Lxi model and performed extensive customizations to make it look badass. A black PPF, demon headlamps, mammoth alloy wheels, tinted windows, de-chromed Suzuki logo, new fog lamp, etc., are visible. However, the main attraction has to be the 20-inch alloys which extend well out of the car. Just the alloys ended up costing him around Rs 1 lakh. There is also a Sidhu Moosewala sticker on the left door panel. On the inside, there is a new music system with tons of components which eat up the entire boot space.
Why Not To Do It
There are multiple reasons to not install large alloy wheels on any car. Note that these facts are not just valid for the Maruti Swift but for any car where you see oversized alloy wheels.
- Mileage – The first vehicle parameter which will take a hit after oversized alloy wheels is the mileage. In fact, even the vlogger in this post shows that the Swift is giving a mileage of just over 10 km/l in city. Remember, the claimed mileage of the Swift in manual is 24.8 km/l. Hence, there is a significant drop.
- Performance – These alloy wheels are extremely heavy. Hence, the engine has to work overtime to achieve the same performance as without these alloys. Hence, you will feel a sluggish performance.
- Legality – Most car modifications are illegal in India. Going for such extreme alloys is something that the traffic Police can challan you for. Hence, you must be careful.
- Suspension – With such heavy alloys, the suspension setup of the car comes under stress since the sidewall of these oversized tyres is thin and the occupants are able to feel the bumps inside the cabin.
- Ride Height – To accommodate these alloys, the owner has lifted the vehicle using aftermarket components. Now, that can cause issues to other components as well. In fact, it also raises the centre of gravity of the Swift. Hence, the ride becomes unstable, especially around the corners.
- Cost – Finally, such large alloy wheels are expensive. Since you can get decent alloys as stock from the company, spending large amounts on aftermarket alloys might be superfluous. These are some disadvantages of going for the aftermarket alloys.
