Road safety has been a critical topic for the government, which is why it has implemented tons of new policies
India is setting new standards for vehicle and road safety with numerous innovative policies and regulations. It is well known that we lose lakhs of lives each year in road accidents. However, many of these could’ve been avoided if people followed traffic rules and the vehicles possessed standard safety equipment. In fact, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways even announced a safety assessment rating for trucks and heavy vehicles recently. Let us take a look at the details here.
India Most Improved G20 Country in Vehicle Safety
In the last few years, the number of new standard safety amenities in cars has risen rapidly. In fact, the Indian Government has taken a strong regulatory action to mandate front and side impact standards, pedestrian protection, M/C ABS and electronic stability control functions. With these, the cars will before even safer, not just for the occupants, but also for the pedestrians. In the last decade, we have seen cars achieve high safety ratings and get many safety features as standard.
The introduction of Bharat NCAP was perhaps the most impactful measure taken in this direction. With it, India became one of the few countries in the world to have an indigenous vehicle safety assessment agency. Along similar lines, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to launch a Safety assessment rating for trucks and commercial vehicles. This will ensure that the commercial vehicle segment is not left unaffected by the improved road safety in the country. Note that this segment plays a key and direct role in boosting the nation’s economy.
My View
India is transforming its road and highway infrastructure exponentially. With it, the safety standards in cars are also improving with each passing year. All this has resulted in a rise in awareness among car buyers, making them safety conscious. In fact, today, people take into account the safety rating of a car prior to making a purchase decision. Going forward, the plan is to reduce the number of car crashes on our roads. Let us keep an eye out for more developments in this regard.
