Rahul Gandhi was recently in San Francisco for a 3-city tour in the United States of America where he performed a bunch of interesting activities with the Indian diaspora.
Rahul Gandhi interacted with a lot of Indians including truck drivers during his recent visit to the United States of America (USA). The purpose of his visit was to address the Indians living in the States. Congress leader Sam Pitroda received him at the airport. In addition, he also met American lawmakers, activists, academics and civil society at the University of California in Santa Cruz. It is hilarious to witness how he responds to listening to the wages that Indians earn there. Here are the details of this case.

The video has been uploaded by vokalbharat on Instagram. In this video, he is seen interacting with an Indian truck driver. There are his companions in the truck as well. While talking about the kind of responsibilities and wages associated with trucking in the USA, he is shocked to hear what the Indian man has to say. The truckie explains that while a lot depends on the work, one could earn around $8,000 – $10,000 every month which roughly translates to Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. Obviously, this amount must be before taxes and therefore, the amount that you will end up netting will be considerably lower.

Nevertheless, this is still much higher than what any average Indian earns in a year. For this reason, Rahul Gandhi is shocked to hear the salary and the surprise is visible on his face. Since this is a short video clip, we don’t get to hear what he had to say afterwards. The trucker also mentions that the salaries are quite high in the USA in general which is why a lot of Indians flock to the country. But it must be understood that the living expenses are also high corresponding to such wages.

What We Think
It is common knowledge that people migrate to a new country in order to earn more money than they could in their home country. But what a lot of people don’t understand is the fact that the living expenses are also high in these countries. As a result, you are not able to pocket a lot of that extra income. Also, the taxes in these countries are quite high. Hence, you don’t end up making as crazy amounts in wages as ubiquitously advertised. Nonetheless, it is still a lot higher than what you would make in India which is why migration is such rampant, particularly in the last decade.
