Known as the ‘Ai3’ until now, the upcoming micro SUV from Hyundai is likely to be positioned between the Grand i10 NIOS and i20
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) today announced the name of its upcoming micro-SUV that looks all set to take on the likes of Tata Punch and Citroen C3. Dubbed Hyundai EXTER, the new model will likely be positioned between the i10 NIOS and i20, thereby undercutting the Venue by a sizeable margin. While dimensions are yet to be revealed, the EXTER is said to be a bit larger than the Casper available in the carmaker’s home market. This could be a result of a longer wheelbase.

From the looks of it, the carmaker will market the Hyundai EXTER as a soft-roader targeted at thrill-seekers and the outdoorsy type. The micro-SUV could offer several customization options in line with its lifestyle positioning. Speaking on the announcement, Mr. Tarun Garg, COO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., said, “We are proud to announce the name of our new SUV – Hyundai EXTER that exemplifies the pulse of Gen Z buyers while empowering them with a smart mobility solution to fuel their wanderlust. Hyundai EXTER is the 8th model in our line up with a SUV body style and we are confident that this new member to our family will provide further fillip to our growth in SUV sales”

Hyundai Ai3 a Close Relative of Casper
While larger, the Hyundai Ai3 is closely related to the Casper. There could be a clear similarity in the aesthetics, especially at the front end. The new model will likely feature a multi-tier lighting setup with hood-level DRLs and the main lamps at a lower level. Spy images reveal an upright SUV-like stance. Also, the side profile will be characterized by squared-off wheel arches and conventionally-placed door handles.

Platform and Dimensions
Underpinning the Hyundai EXTER will be the same platform as the Grand i10 NIOS. As aforementioned, dimensions are yet to be revealed but the micro-SUV is expected to measure 3.8 m in length and have a wheelbase of around 2.45 m. In all likelihood, efficient vehicle packaging would make the EXTER a tad more spacious than the already airy NIOS.
