Hyundai is all set to launch its small car Hyundai 800cc car in India by the year 2011. It makes a huge sense for the number two automaker of India to have a car in this segment as only Maruti Suzuki is selling 800cc cars, Maruti 800 and Maruti Alto in India. With Maruti 800 being phased out from April 2010, the only car in this segment remains Alto, with about an annual demand of small cars to reach 20 Lakh units by year 2011-12, it makes perfect sense for Hyundai to take this step.
The cheapest car from Hyundai in India is Hyundai Santro priced at around Rs. 2.7 Lakhs. The new Hyundai 800 will be priced at Rs. 2 lakhs which is a very close price to the Maruti 800 and the upcoming Chevrolet Spark 800 which will be launched around same time.
Research and development (R&D) work for the new car is going on at a fast pace at R&D centers in Hyderabad and Namyam,Korea. The car will be manufactured at the Chennai Plant of Hyundai and will be exported world over from India only.
Specifications Of Hyundai 800 Car
Official specifications are not out yet, but its expected to be a 800cc, 3 cylinder MPFI petrol engine with 4 valves per cylinder for better engine efficiency and fuel mileage. At this size of engine, the expected power will be around 45 BHP with torque ratings anywhere between 60 to 80 Nm. Since the engine will be at-least BS4 or higher emission norms compliant, the fuel mileage can be expected to be around 16 to 18 KM per litre in city traffic and close to 20 on highway. Diesel variants are not expected as the price of the car will be high and which will defeat the purpose of low priced small car. It will have Air-conditioned with heater, but power steering may not be included in base model if the front load of the vehicle is low. This will be an engineering challenge for the design team to keep it low weight, stable and balance weight appropriately.
