The Honda WRV, which is the Japanese manufacturer’s latest contender in the sub-compact SUV space, has managed to establish a pretty strong foothold in the market. In a recent development, it has come to light that WRV has replaced the City as the largest selling Honda car in the country. Thanks to the burgeoning demand for the WRV, Honda registered a 22% YoY sales growth for the month of July. It sold a total of 17,085 units as against the 14,033 units in same period of last year. Honda sold a total of 4,894 units of the WRV last month. The City was a close second at just 40 units lesser. However, it’s the first time WRV has displaced the City to become the top selling Honda car.
Honda is now planning to ramp up the production of the WRV to meet the ever increasing demand. Currently, the manufacturer produces 3,400 units of the WRV. This number could now go up to 5,000. So far, Honda has managed to sell over 20,000 units of the WRV since its launch. It has even received more than 27,000 bookings during the same period. The WRV seems to have managed to garner a high interest among crossover buyers of the country. In the sales report for the month of July 2017, the WRV has outsold the City sedan to become the most-sold Honda car in India for the month. Honda sold a total of 4,894 units of WRV in July as opposed to 4,854 units of City sedan. Currently the Honda WRV has a waiting period of 2 months. The WRV sits between the Jazz and the BRV in Honda’s product range for India. Prices of the WRV fall in the Rs 7.66 Lakh to Rs 9.91 Lakh range.

The manufacturer is now looking to cut down the waiting period before the advent of this year’s festive season. It may be noted that car companies enjoy an increase in demand during the Hindu festive season. This is because people believe it’s auspicious to buy a new vehicle in this season. Thanks to the strong sales performance, Honda WRV is now one of the top five best selling UVs for the month of June. In June, Honda sold 4,243 units of the Jazz-based crossover.
The implementation of GST saw the WRV getting a price cut of up to Rs 10,000. Prices of this car now start at Rs 7.66 lakh and go all the way to Rs 9.91 lakh. Earlier, the car retailed in the price range of Rs 7.75 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The WRV borrows in plenty from the Jazz and this sub four-metre crossover is mainly aimed at the likes of Hyundai i20 Active and even the Maruti Vitara Brezza. Akin to the Jazz, the WRV comes with two engine options – 1.2-litre, iVTEC petrol and 1.5-litre iDTEC diesel.

It’s a bit unsure right now but Honda might even launch a new 1.5-litre iVTEC variant of the WRV. It will come with the same 118 BHP engine that powers the City. With the launch of WRV 1.5 Petrol model, the manufacturer will be able to take the fight straight to the likes of Fiat Abarth, Volkswagen Polo GT and Maruti Baleno RS. The WRV might even get a 7-step CVT with steering-mounted paddle-shifters. Currently, there’s no automatic option for the WRV, which is something that might be taking a toll on the car’s sales performance.

Honda WRV Boot Space
Boot Capacity | 363 Litres |
The Honda WRV offers a large boot. With a total capacity of 363-litres, the WRV enjoys quite an advantage over many of its rivals. Even on comparison with the Jazz, the WRV gets 9-litres of additional boot space. Unfortunately, however, the Honda WRV misses out on the 60:40 split ‘Magic Seats’ that are available on the Jazz.
Honda WRV Dimensions
Dimensions | Honda WRV |
Length | 3,999mm |
Width | 1,734 mm |

The Honda WRV is a derivative of the Jazz hatchback. However, it’s marginally bigger in terms of dimensions. On comparison with the Jazz. the WRV is as much as 44mm longer, 40mm wider and 57mm taller. The WRV has a ground clearance of 188 mm, which is 23 mm more than that of the Jazz. Honda WRV Competition
Above are some comparison reviews of the Honda WRV with its closest rivals.
Honda WRV Specifications
Petrol Engine | 1.2-litre i-VTEC Petrol |
Max. Power | 90 PS at 6,000 RPM |
Peak Torque | 110 Nm at 4,800 RPM |
Transmission | 5-speed Manual |
Diesel Engine | 1.5-litre i-DTEC Diesel |
Max. Power | 100 PS at 3,600 RPM |
Peak Torque | 200 Nm at 1,750 RPM |
Transmission | 6-speed Manual |
As can be seen in the specifications table, the new Honda WRV shares its engines with the Honda Jazz. This means that the WRV gets a 1.2-litre Petrol and a 1.5-litre Diesel engine. While the petrol engine comes with a 5-speed Manual Transmission, the Diesel engine gets a 6-speed Manual Transmission. There’s no CVT on offer on the petrol engine model. Various Honda WRV test drive reports state that the new model is much like the Jazz to drive. These test drive reviews go on to state that while the petrol engine is very refined, it’s a bit sluggish in lower RPMs. The Diesel engine, on the other hand, has good grunt but rapidly runs out of steam at higher RPMs.
Honda Cars India is yet to make an official announcement regarding this but there are chances that it will soon launch a new 1.5-litre iVTEC variant of the WRV. This variant will get the same 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol engine that powers the Honda City sedan. With the launch of the WRV 1.5, Honda Cars India will be able to have a rival for models like the Volkswagen Polo GT series, Fiat Punto Abarth and Maruti Baleno RS. The Jazz-based crossover might also get a 7-step CVT with steering-mounted paddle shifters. There’s no automatic transmission being offered with the WRV at the moment. This might have been taking a slight toll on the sales performance of this sub-compact crossover.
Honda WRV Mileage
Petrol | 17.5 KMPL |
Diesel | 25.5 KMPL |
Honda Cars India claims that the petrol engine variant of the new Honda WRV offers a peak mileage of upto 17.5 KMPL. On the other hand, Honda claims the Diesel model of the WRV to offer a peak mileage of 25.5 KMPL. Thanks to such high mileage figures, the WRV becomes one of the most fuel efficient cars in its segment. We believe all Honda cars on sale in India offer a good mix of performance and average fuel mileage. Things don’t change with the advent of the WRV.
