Engine Performance
As can be seen in the above table, the new Honda Unicorn 160 enjoys a slight displacement advantage over all its immediate rivals. However, unlike what some of you might have guessed, it isn’t the winner in the power stakes and the Pulsar 150 DTSi, with a maximum power of 15.5 PS, continues to be the most powerful model in this company. However, it is the torque-game where the Unicorn 160 gains back its lost territory. With a peak torque of 14.6 Nm, the new bike has considerably more torque than both the Pulsar 150 and the updated Yammie. It is only the new Suzuki Gixxer that comes close to the Unicorn 160 with a max torque of 14 Nm. In real world conditions, all this should translate into an effortless performance from the new Unicorn. As we’ve been saying, HMSI seems to be aiming the commuter-end of the segment with its new motorcycle and with such a healthy torque figure, the new model should make for a strong performer in the stop and go traffic our cities are famous for. On the highway though, it is bound to suffer from a slightly less exciting top-end performance.
Fuel Mileage
The new Honda Unicorn 160 doesn’t have stellar power figures to boast of, but it sure has what it takes to keep most of the buyers in this segment happy! With a fuel economy of 62 km/l, the new model is highly more fuel efficient than other bikes here. It is only the Suzuki Gixxer that comes close to the new Honda Unicorn in the fuel mileage comparison. The least fuel efficient bike here is the updated FZ, which, even with a fuel injection system, has a fuel economy that is comparable to that from the fast aging Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTSi. Much of this can be attributed to the FZ’s fat rear tyre and hence, the higher rolling resistance.
Price
The Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTSi continues to impress with the lowest asking price, but the new Honda Unicorn 160 isn’t far behind in the VFM game. With a starting price of roughly INR 69k (for the std. variant), the new model is almost 10k cheaper than the Yamaha FZ V2.0. Also, it is around INR 5,000 cheaper than the Suzuki Gixxer. With a torquey motor, high refinement levels, monoshock, and a high fuel efficiency thrown in, the new Honda Unicorn 160, at a starting price of INR 69,350 makes for a compelling buy!
