Reports suggest that Honda is planning for a sub-compact SUV in the global markets. There are chances of it coming over to the Indian market.
Honda is one of the last manufacturers in India to have a sub-compact metre SUV in the market. It has one in the global market, based on the previous generation (our current generation) Jazz. We have the WR-V but it passes off more like a crossover.
Going by a new report, Honda seems to be working on a sub-compact SUV. It will be an all-new SUV built for the global markets and most likely, for India as well. The new SUV will be based on the platform of Amaze with some minor revisions.
The compact SUV market is booming in the popular foreign markets as well as India. Brands like Tata, Hyundai, Maruti and Mahindra are doing well in this space. As for Ford, its best selling model in India is the EcoSport.

Honda’s SUV would borrow its engine from Amaze along with its platform. The sedan uses a 1.2 Litre iVTEC petrol and a 1.5 Litre iDTEC diesel engine. The petrol engine is capable of producing 90 BHP and 110 Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine puts out 100 BHP and 200 Nm of torque.
Going forward with these engines will surely help Honda in keeping the prices under control. Its features list, however, could be matched up with the new generation City. The upgraded sedan is scheduled to be launched in March this year.
If Honda brings in the sub-compact SUV in India, its rivals would be the Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon. Even Renault and Kia are coming up with their small SUVs to keep up with the trend.

However, it is unlikely to come to India this year. Honda’s big launch for 2020 is the new City. Probably, by the next year, if Jazz or WR-V are towards the end of their life in India, Honda could reveal one.
