Amidst their SUV-focused strategy and the introduction of new SUV models, Honda Car India revealst they will not discontinue the Honda City and Amaze sedans in India. They are committed to keeping these sedan models available alongside their growing SUV lineup, which includes the recently launched Elevate compact SUV, with five more SUVs planned for India by 2030. This pretty much quashes all rumours spread recently by a report on the imminent discontinuation of these sedans.

Next-Gen Honda Amaze in the Pipeline
Although Honda is focusing on SUVs in the coming years, they remain committed to selling their core models. The Honda Amaze, in particular, will still be available and is a strong performer. It competes with popular models like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor in the sub-compact sedan segment. The Honda City, one of Honda’s most popular models in India, has been doing fairly well in its class. In fact, among all the C2-segmenters, the sales of the City are at par with those of fresher models like the Skoda Slavia and VW Virtus. The latest-gen Hyundai Verna is the current best-seller of the segment.
While the popularity of sedans isn’t all that great anymore, these cars continue to be significant contributors to automakers’ sales and revenue. The Honda Amaze and City have found enough buyers due to attributes like those of comfort, refinement, reliability and hassle-free ownership experience. Currently, Honda’s Tapakura facility not just serves the domestic needs but also serves export markets. Amaze and City are shipped to South Africa in the RHD versions. Meanwhile, Left-Hand Drive (LHD) models are exported to Mexico, Turkey, and the Middle East.
In the coming years, Honda Cars India will likely introduce the third-generation Amaze. The next-gen version will likely share aplenty with the global-spec Brio. While it will utilise current model’s platform, expect it to bring in a fresh design and more modern features. Meanwhile, the fifth-gun Honda City will soldier on for at least a couple of years more before reaching the end of its career. In fact, last month, the carmaker even came up with a new Elegant Edition trim to capitalise on the higher-than-usual demand during the festive period.

Honda’s next offering for India could be the electric version of the Elevate. The Honda Elevate is the latest contender in the mid-size SUV segment, competing against strong contenders like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara. While there are several key players in this category, these three models have consistently dominated the sales charts. As the automotive industry embraces electrification, manufacturers are unveiling their plans to introduce electric variants of their popular models. Hyundai’s upcoming Creta electric version, set to launch next year, is a prime example. It’s important to note that these electric versions serve as a precursor to a new generation of electric vehicles designed from the ground up, a direction also confirmed by Honda.
