Now you can retro-fit CNG and LPG kits in BS6-compliant cars. The Indian government has allowed new modification options.
As fuel prices keep on increasing, most users are looking for more efficient travel options. If you still want to travel in your own vehicle, CNG and LPG are great options. Now, the Indian government is also pushing this option. As per the new rule, now you can retrofit BS6-compliant cars with CNG as well as LPG kits. Previously, you could only use these external kits in BS4-spec vehicles. Now, car owners can implement such modifications in the BS6-spec cars. Let’s a closer look at the new options.

The Centre government has now permitted retro-fitment of CNG as well as LPG kits in petrol/diesel cars which are BS6-compliant. Previously, such modifications were only permissible in BS4 vehicles. The new notification about the latest CNG/LPG retro-fitment rules on BS6 cars has been issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Additionally, the government has also allowed CNG/LPG engines to replace diesel engines in BS6 vehicles, less than 3.5 tonnes.
The new rule is a good step to promote the usage of CNG cars on Indian roads. This will reduce cost and fossil fuel use. Since electric cars are still not quite mainstream, CNG/ LPG kits can really help budget users while reducing environmental pollution due to carbon emissions from petrol/diesel vehicles. Additionally, CNG vehicles offer more mileage than regular fueled cars. However, there is still a shortage of company-fitted CNG vehicles. Retro-fit CNG and LPG kits in BS6-compliant cars can empower users to adopt these options easily.

The new notification includes the type approval requirements for retro-fitment. It is said to have been formulated in consultation with stakeholders. “This ministry… has notified retro-fitment of CNG and LPG kit on BS (Bharat Stage)-6 gasoline vehicles and replacement of diesel engines with CNG/LPG engines in case of BS6 vehicles, less than 3.5 tonnes,” the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said in a notification. “CNG is an environment-friendly fuel and can help in limiting the carbon emissions from cars. Regular-fueled cars emit content of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, particulate matter and smoke in a greater amount than CNG cars,” the ministry added. Hopefully, the government also adds more CNG filling stations to further support this move.
