Diesel powered cars is the need of the Indian automobile market now-a-days and why shouldn’t they be since diesel cars incur less running cost and also deliver better fuel efficiency. Every automobile giant is working on new diesel engines for our domestic market and as we know even Honda is going to switch to diesel cars soon.
General Motors (Chevrolet India), the biggest automobile company in the world, sensed the diesel car demand in our market long back and is now planning to develop diesel engines specifically for the Indian market. These engines will be extremely suitable for the Indian subcontinent and will not only be manufactured here itself but will also be exported to other international markets later.
General Motors already has a couple of models lined-up for our market of which the first one would be Chevrolet Sail hatchback and sedan versions followed by an MPV. The company will be launching the same in diesel versions and will develop these engines specifically for the Indian road conditions. The research and developed that will go into these diesel engines will be utilized for meeting the demands in booming international markets as well, since the brand will export these engines from India to other developing markets.
President and Managing Director of General Motors India, Lowell Paddock said “The development of diesel mill for Sail and MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicles) would help the company grow in the country and will assist GM in entering other auto markets where people have special attraction to diesel cars,”
Nothing comes as a confirmation but as per speculations the diesel engines will first reach North and South Africa after which other markets will be considered too.
