Instances of wild animals venturing onto roads and obstructing traffic are not uncommon. In the past, we’ve seen numerous instances of road users’ running into wild elephants that end up on public roads running through forests. A recent video from Tamil Nadu captures yet another such instance, showing a wild elephant attacking a Hyundai Aura taxi full of tourists. Fortunately, both the tourists and the driver narrowly escape the wraith of the mammoth. The compact sedan, though, wasn’t as lucky.

Hyundai Xcent Taxi Damaged by Elephant
This video comes from Asianet News’ YouTube channel. It captures a recent incident that took place along the Mettupalayam-Kotagiri National Highway. This road is fairly used by tourists heading to the popular destination of Ooty. In the video, a stationary Hyundai Xcent taxi is seen on the roadside, with an elephant standing nearby. As per the report, tourists were traveling in the taxi as it came face to face with the elephant. The elephant charged towards the car on noticing it. Thankfully, the occupants could spot the impending danger and react quickly.
All the tourists and the driver left the car and fled to a safe distance. Meanwhile, the elephant damaged the vehicle. It even reached into the cabin and started taking out items and tossing them onto the road. Both the right-hand-side doors seem to have been damaged by the elephant. After attacking the car from the front, the elephant went to the rear. He smashed the trunk. Reportedly, the elephant even attempted to lift the car and push it off the road. The video even shows onlookers screaming in fear as the mammoth unleashes his fury on the Hyundai Aura.

Major Catastrophe Avoided
As seen, the elephant inflicts considerable damage to the Hyundai Aura. According to the reporter, while elephants are a common sight on this road, it’s the first instance of an elephant attacking a vehicle in this region. Locals promptly contacted forest authorities, who successfully took the elephant back into the jungle. Thankfully, the tourists could escape before the wild animal could reach the car. Similar incidents have occurred in India previously. In case of such an encounter, it’s crucial to remain calm and stay inside the vehicle. If animals approach, slowly reverse the car without making noise. If time permits, seek a safer location if driving in reverse isn’t an option.
