With new technologies emerging from the horizon, the need of the hour is to come up with mini-cars which are fuel efficient and never too expensive for someone to afford. Keeping this in mind Fiat has come up with a car following the footsteps of the 50s predecessors, that will sport a 2-cylinder, Twin air unit petrol engine having a displacement of 900cc and will go on sale under the same name Fiat 500 Minicar.
Fiat is expected to unveil its new car at the Geneva Motor Show next month as it has been announced by the CEO Sergio Marchionne.
This new engine will be the only 2-cylinder engine being launched after Tata launched its two cylinder, 623cc engine generating 33 BHP car, Tata Nano. This car on the other hand has a 900cc engine which generates 85BHP of power which hardly differs in output from the 500 series having 1.4 litre inline-four cylinder engine.
The reason for this process of reducing displacement and removing cylinders is seen to be CO2 emission rules which are to take effect in Europe from 2012 and so far the company hasn’t revealed any specifications as well as the CO2 performance information. According to officials the Fiat 500 Minicars fitted with the engine are expected to emit less than 100 grams/kilometer of the greenhouse gas and the PUR-02 is the greenest version coming with the 500 series. It is also equipped with a standard stop-start system and currently emits 113g/km.
Fiat with such a car aims to continue to lead in Europe in terms of CO2 emissions and this TwinAir engine certainly contributes to this goal.
