Here we have compiled a list of most fuel efficient cars that were launched in 2019 and early 2020 and Tata and Hyundai seems to have come out on top.
The year 2019 and then stepping into 2020, saw many new car launches from brand-new SUVs, hatchbacks to compact sedans. And that is despite the slowdown the automotive sector has been experiencing in the past couple of years. Of course, fuel efficiency remains a top priority for every Indian car buyer. While diesel cars still dominated the sales for the obvious reasons, our petrol cars have also come a long way in terms of fuel efficiency. Here we have compiled a list of the most fuel efficient cars launched in 2019/2020.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is one of the most fuel efficient hatchback currently on sale in India. It is available with a 1.2L petrol engine which returns a mileage of 20.7 km/l. In fact, it is one of the most efficient petrol engines around in hatchbacks. The 1.2L diesel engine then gives a mileage of 26.2 km/l. If you drive with a light foot, you can stretch up to 27 km/l. Its available with both a manual and an automatic gearbox and prices for the Grand i10 Nios starts from Rs 5.05 lakh.
Hyundai Aura
The Hyundai Aura is a compact sedan based on the Grand i10 Nios. It is in fact available with the same engines as the Nios – a 1.2L petrol and a 1.2L diesel engine. The claimed fuel-efficiency of Hyundai Aura 1.2L petrol MT is 20.5 km/l while the 1.2L petrol AMT is 20.1 km/l. Meanwhile, the 1.2L diesel MT has a combined fuel efficiency figure of 25.35 km/l while the 1.2L diesel AMT returns 25.4 km/l. There’s also a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine with a manual gearbox which has an average of 20.5km/l. Prices for the Aura start from Rs 5.8 lakh.
Tata Altroz
The Tata Altroz was launched earlier this year and it has been one of the best new cars to hit our roads this year. It is powered by a 1.2L petrol engine which gives a fuel efficiency figure of 19km/l. There’s also a 1.5L diesel engine which gives you an average of 25km/l. Both engines are available with a 5-speed manual gearbox and both engines were BS6 compliant right from launch. Tata will launch an automatic version sometime in the future. The Tata Altroz also boasts of a five-star safety rating from Global NCAP.
Tata Tiago and Tigor Facelifts
Tata updated the Tiago hatchback and the Tigor compact sedan with a significant facelift earlier this year. Both the cars received significant cosmetic changes on the inside and the outside. Tata also discontinued the 1.05L diesel engine on both the cars with the facelift. They have however retained the 1.2L Revotron petrol engine which produces 85 bhp and 112Nm of peak torque. This engine from Tata return a fuel efficiency figure of 23.84km/l which makes the Tiago and the Tigor one of the most fuel efficient compact petrol cars in the country.

Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue is the oldest car in this list here. It was launched in the middle of last year but it is also the most fuel efficient compact SUV we have in the country. The Venue is offered with as many as three engines – a 1.2L petrol engine, a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine and a 1.5L diesel engine. The two petrol engines have a fuel efficiency figure of 18.27km/l ans 18.15 km/l respectively while the diesel engine returns an average of 23.7 km/l. Hyundai is still yet to launch the BS6 diesel version of the Venue.

Seems like its just Tata Motors and Hyundai who have featured in our list here. It must also be noted that the fuel efficiency figures quoted above are based on figures quoted by ARAI and conducted in the lab under ideal conditions. They do not indicate real-world figures. You can still achieve near about figures in your daily driving if you drive efficiently.
