Built by Ford Performance, this electric Mustang Cobra Jet produces a massive 1381hp and comes dressed as a dragster, with production limited to only 68 units.
The Mustang is the world’s best selling sportscar, even more than the Porsche 911 and recently, it celebrated its 56th birth anniversary. The first image that pops up in your mind whenever you hear about the Mustang must be of a loud American muscle car with a roaring V8 engine. Well, over the years, that V8 engine has been reduced to four-cylinder engines in some iterations but this one is even more outrageous. This is an electric Mustang we are talking about and it has been built by Ford Performance.
Its called the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and it produces a manic 1381bhp. That’s quite a name we must say. This electric Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is a limited production model and apparently it can hit speeds of 241 km/h in just 8 seconds or so. The ‘Cobra Jet’ is however not a new suffix added to the Mustang name. It was used for Mach I versions of the Mustang from the 1960s and has actually been inspired from that.
Ford is only going to produce 68 of these electric Cobra Jet Mustangs. It’s an electric car and so it will obviously have oodles of torque. 1491Nm of peak torque to be precise and all of that is sent just to the rear wheels. Yes, those massive dragster-like wheels and tyres definitely make some sense now. The prototype is still undergoing testing and will make its debut later this year.

Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports said, “This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, but a challenge we loved jumping into. We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now.”

We still do not have much information about further details of this electric Mustang like its batteries, electric motors, the range and other mechanical hardware. However, Ford has shared that this is just the first of few examples the motorsport division has made and its planning to work on many such projects. Interestingly, Ford also uses the Mustang name for their new electric car, the Mustang Mach-e which is essentially an electric SUV, or sort of. But this Cobra Jet is the original Mustang that has gone electric here and it sure is demanding some attention.
