US automaker Ford has filed a new patent that will enable users to drive SUVs while standing up, like a tank.
Driving an SUV while standing seems like a radical idea. However, it might be a common sight in future. Since almost every new car is packed with the latest tech features and safety systems, car manufacturers are looking for new highlights to stand out. Now, Ford has filed a patent for a new driving system that allows you to drive an SUV like a tank while standing. It is not clear what Ford plans to do with the new tech and whether it will be available on a commercial scale or as an optional feature in topless vehicles like the Bronco.

The new Standing-up Driving System is quite an escalation over the latest features like ADAS. However, it can be quite handy when the driver needs to stand up to get a better view of the road during off-roading. However, it comes with several safety risks. While the Standing-up Driving System offers a 360-degree view of the surroundings, it comes with several limitations. It remains to be seen how Ford manages to make it a mainstream feature. The company might offer it with upcoming Raptor and Wildtrak models. It might also be suitable for trucks with appropriate sunroofs.
How Ford standing-up driving system works?
As per the patent, the new driving system features capacitive touch controls which are mounted on the SUV’s windshield header. The driver can use these to control the car while standing up. This includes control over steering, throttle, and brake. Additionally, the new standing-up driving system is designed to be automatically activated based on the driver’s position to ensure a seamless transition. It uses sensors to the driver is fully seated or not. If the system detects that the driver is partially seated or standing up, the secondary controls on the windshield header are activated.
