The Amaze compact sedan was Honda‘s first diesel car in India featuring a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Honda claims a mileage of 25.8 kmpl. Based on the Brio hatchback, the Amaze has been way more successful in India thanks to the availability of a diesel option and that too with such high fuel efficiency figures. It one of the better looking compact sedans in the market right now despite being based on a hatchback. Although the 1.5 L diesel engine performs well, it suffers from high NVH levels. The interior and boot space is class leading thanks to Honda’s brilliant packaging, and the recent updates have addressed issues such as a lack of features and a quirky dashboard design.

4. FORD ASPIRE – 25.83 kmpl

Ford‘s foray into the lucrative compact sedan segment might not have turned out to be as successful as they had hoped, but there is no denying the fact that the Ford Aspire is one of the best compact sedans out there. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC powering the diesel Honda City is one of the major driving forces behind the sedan’s popularity. People love its  distinctive styling and the futuristic interiors. The City comes packed with features, some of which include a feather touch climate control system, sunroof, paddle shifters (petrol only), etc. As mentioned earlier, the engine is good on performance and the City is a real pleasure to drive. Recently, the manufacturer also introduced the Dzire diesel with a 5-speed AMT.

The Ciaz SHVS claims to be the most fuel efficient diesel sedan cars in India with an ARAI certified mileage of 28.09 kmpl. The manufacturer that gave us the “kitna deti hai?” ad campaign has stuck by its philosophy of mileage drives sales and optimised the Fiat sourced 1.3 litre Multijet diesel to deliver an impressive economy of 28.09 kmpl, albeit under simulated test conditions. The Ciaz is already a successful product for the automobile giant thanks to it great pricing, smart looking exteriors and beautifully designed, feature-rich interiors. Last year, Maruti introduced the SHVS technology, which helped push the Ciaz’s mileage from 26.21 kmpl to 28.09 kmpl.
