The Tata Altroz is all set for its launch in January 2020. It is Tata’s first take on the premium hatchback segment and it seems pretty promising indeed.
Tata Motors is on an absolutely roll and they will be starting 2020 with quite a few new and important launches. They have the Nexon facelift and the Nexon EV coming up. A couple of days ago they announce the coming of the Gravitas SUV which is essentially a seven-seater version of the Harrier and of course, there’s the Altroz. Tata Motors have rolled out the first Altroz from its Pune plant ahead of its launch early next year.
The Tata Altroz was scheduled for a launch much earlier this year. However, Tata has been delaying the launch since then because they wanted to launch the Altroz with BS-compliant engines right from the start. The carmaker has confirmed that the Tata Altroz’s India launch will take place in January 2020. The Altroz debuted at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. We fist saw it in concept form at the 2018 Auto Expo sporting Tata’s new Impact 2.0 design language and we will say that the production car hasn’t strayed much away from the concept.
The Altroz is the first Tata car based on the company’s new ALFA (Agile, Light, Flexible and Advanced) platform – one of two platforms that all future Tata Motors products will be based on. In terms of dimensions, the Altroz is the widest car in the segment but its also the acr with the shortest wheelbase. That will compromise on the rear leg room to some extent but it gets a reasonably sized 341-litre boot space which is at par with the competition.

On the interiors however, the Altroz isn’t as radical as it on the exterior. In fact, the cabin design looks somewhat similar to what we have seen on the Nexon. The dashboard features a free-standing 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and it also gets a brand new steering wheel. The Tata Altroz also gets a segment-first semi-digital instrument cluster. It will also be equipped with ambient lighting and Google-powered voice-activated functions.

Under the hood, the Tata Altroz will come with three engine options – there’s the 85hp, 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated, three-cylinder petrol engine from the Tiago; a 102hp, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine shared with the Nexon, and a 90hp version of the Nexon’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. All engines will come paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox at launch. Tata will introduce an automatic gearbox option on a later date. Expect Tata Altroz prices to be in the range of Rs 5-8 lakh (ex-showroom), which will help the model undercut its rivals – the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Honda Jazz.
