This has to be the first Mahindra Scorpio N in the country with a CNG kit. We see people heading to the aftermarket to get CNG kits installed on their cars. Looks like the low fuel efficiency of the petrol variant is the reason for the owner to go for a CNG kit. CNG offers much lower running costs. In metro cities, the infrastructure around CNG has been developed extensively. Hence, people don’t have to think twice before getting a brand new CNG car or getting the CNG kit installed afterwards. Interestingly, it is quite common to get a CNG kit for compact vehicles. But this has to be the first instance that we have reported where the CNG kit is incorporated into such a large SUV. Mahindra Scorpio N with CNG Kit
This video comes from Easy Drive CNG on YouTube. The host narrates the entire process of installing a CNG kit on this Scorpio N. Additionally, the visuals help us watch the entire installation process in a step-wise manner. The team has imported this special CNG kit from Europe. Hence, the components are high quality and unlike other kits which are available in India. This kit follows the direct injection method which also uses 10-15% petrol with CNG to operate a large SUV. The weight of the cylinder is 12 kg and it can hold 8 kg of gas. It has been neatly integrated into the boot of the SUV without compromising the legroom for the third-row passengers. After installing the kit, the host takes the SUV for a ride and finds no significant decrease in performance. The claimed range is around 150 km.

Pros and Cons
The biggest advantage of getting CNG kits is the running costs. The monthly expenses on petrol go down significantly. With the ever-rising prices of petrol, people had to look for alternatives. Since EVs are too costly at the moment, CNG looks like the natural alternative. The flexibility of switching between CNG and petrol is an added bonus. On the other end of the spectrum, the reduction in performance due to low power and torque outputs in the CNG version is a negative. Also, it is not possible to get this powertrain registered in your RC. Hence, you must know these things before deciding to go for this.

Author’s Note
In today’s climate, CNG stands out as a compelling alternative to petrol-powered vehicles, particularly considering the soaring prices of petrol. Consequently, prospective car buyers are seeking vehicles with lower operating costs. With stringent emission regulations prompting many automakers to move away from diesel engines, CNG emerges as an attractive option, especially in metropolitan areas with adequate infrastructure. The versatility of CNG cars, capable of running on both CNG and petrol, alleviates concerns about range limitations for owners. With a simple press of a button, they can seamlessly transition to petrol when their CNG supply is depleted. This flexibility largely accounts for the notable surge in the popularity of CNG cars in recent times.
