This swanky Ambassador has been reimagined by DC Design as an electric car for the 21st century and is claimed to do the 0-100kph sprint in under 4 seconds.
DC Design – now known as DC2 – has come up with swanky concepts time and again and this time, they have struck the nostalgia chord. You wouldn’t have imagined the humble Hindustan Ambassador in such a form but now, DC Design has given it a fresh identity for the 21st Century. What’s more? The Ambassador has been re-imagined here as an all electric vehicle. Although still a concept, it could hit production very soon indeed. Let’s look at it in a little more detail.
At first glance, it might not resemble the original Ambassador at all but look closely and you will find the references. Take the curved front fenders for example or the nose bulge on the bonnet or even the curved windscreen. But then the modern elements are even more striking. The massive chrome grille on the face with new LED headlamps also have mild resemblance to the original face of the Amby.
The squared off flared wheel arches are again a modern take on the squarish wheel arches of the original Amby. The chrome lining all along the glass area is also a very premium touch. At the rear, this electric Amby has squarish LED tail lamps and a strong shoulder line extends from the front door all across the boot lit at the rear. The compact proportions of the car will particular be suited for the city. Lastly, the multi-spoke chrome wheels add that last bit of retro and classiness.
The electric Amby is taller than the original Ambassador and it also sits lower. The reason is that the battery has been pecked under the floor which lowers the center on gravity and also does not compromise much on interior space. The concept version showcased here is a two-door but the production model will be a four-door like the original. The electric Amby has been built with a lot of carbon composite materials to keep the weight low without compromising on structural integrity. Also, Dilip Chabbria, founder of DC Design, claims that the car will be able to do the 0-100kph sprint in under 4 seconds. That’s modern sportscar territory.

Mr Chabbria has also revealed that a Swiss company is working on the electric motors, one for each wheel. The car should be ready for trails in the next couple of weeks but the lockdown is what is holding things up. However, the complete project should be ready in the second half of this year. This car is meant to appeal to customers who would appreciate this icon in this modern rendition. The electric Amby also has resemblance to the hot-rod Amby concept that was showcased by DC at the 2008 Auto Expo, more than a decade ago.

Not much is known about the interiors of this electric Ambassador by DC Design but considering from what we have seen from DC, the interiors will be bespoke and very customizable too. Interestingly, the electric Amby will take over the Avanti’s assembly line that ends production and will be replaced by the TCA sports car showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
