The legendary automobile designer Dilip Chhabria, owner of DC Design, once built the iconic Mercedes SLR300 from W124 E-Class sedan. DC Design is the biggest car modification house in the country. It has transformed every kind of cars into just about any other vehicle. I have reported tons of examples by DC Design where the donor model is almost non-recognizable. The Mercedes SLR300 was a two-seat sports racing car which took part in the 1955 World Sportscar Championship. It was also called the W 196 S and is based on the W 196 R. On the other hand, the Mercedes W124 was on sale in the mass market from 1984 to 1997. Let us take a look at the details of this modified conversion here.
Dilip Chhabria Built Mercedes SLR300 from W124 E-Class
These images emerge from the official DC2 Dilip Chhabria page on Facebook. It mentions that this Mercedes SLR300 was built by Dilip Chhabria back in 2011. The final outcome is quite impressive. At the front, it gets the round headlamps on the scooper out section on either side of the bonnet. Also, the curvaceous bonnet and the sheer length of it ooze an imposing road presence. There is a large grille section with curved sides. Moving down the sides reveals a rather unique appearance.
This includes a straight line above the wheel arches. The exhaust pipes are extended out from the side panels which is a trademark of the SLR300. The two-seat layout suits the racing DNA of the vehicle. At the rear, the sloping bootline has been design immaculately. The spoked wheel reminds us of the era gone by. It is hard to fathom that this is a consequence of a relatively sober Mercedes W124 E-Class. Back in the day, the E-Class and other Mercedes cars were designed rather subtly in comparison to the flashy designs we see today. All in all, this has to be the most extreme transformation of two vintage cars by an Indian car modification house.
Our View
I have been fascinated by the professionalism and expertise of Dilip Chhabria and his team at DC2 Design. The fact that he created the iconic Mercedes SLR300 from W124 E-Class back in 2011 is a testament to the fact that he has been achieving such incredible feats in our market for over a decade now. The prime aspect which sets DC2 Design apart from the rest of the field is that it has modified cars from just about every segment. This includes entry-level budget hatchbacks to ultra-opulent luxury cars. I shall keep an eye out for more such cases.
