A government panel has proposed banning Diesel cars in major Indian cities by 2027.
A recent Reuters report suggested switching to pure electric and gas-fuelled vehicles in cities with large populations. The Indian government has been pushing the EVs for a while. Now, a government panel has shared a new proposal to promote cleaner mobility solutions. An oil ministry panel has proposed a ban on using diesel-powered four-wheelers in all major cities across the country by 2027. It hopes that the ban on diesel cars in polluted towns is necessary to reduce vehicular emissions.

Diesel Car Sales Could Stop in Indian Metros
India is one of the significant contributors to greenhouse emissions. Finally, the Indian government is taking strict measures to address pollution. Unfortunately, the automotive industry might soon lose a significant segment in the coming years. If the new proposal comes into effect, all diesel car sales in metros will stop. As of now, it is not clear if the oil and gas ministry will seek cabinet approval to implement these proposals.

Currently, Diesel accounts for about two-fifths of refined fuel consumption in India. Out of this 80 percent of consumption is in the transport sector. The panel seems to believe that all measures should be taken to boost electric vehicle use in India.

Only Electric CIty Buses by 2030
The new panel also advocated the removal of all fossil-fuel-powered city buses, in favor of electric buses. “By 2030, no city buses should be added which are not electric…diesel buses for city transport should not be added from 2024 onwards,” it stated reportedly said in the report. The report adds that the panel has also suggested a targeted extension of incentives for electric vehicles under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles scheme (FAME) beyond March 31.
