The Etios has a 25% larger displacement engine (1.5 Litre) compared to that of Dzire (1.2 Litre) which is why the performance numbers are quite different. Also besides being larger and fitted with more powerful engine, the Etios Petrol sedan is about 30 Kg lighter in weight which gives it a better power to weight ratio and makes it more agile. The engine of Etios seems better in terms of power, torque, although mileage of Etios Petrol is lower than that of Dzire with Manual transmission.

In terms of agility, the Etios stands ahead with a better power to weight ratio and better torque, but the Swift Dzire is ahead in terms of sharper handling characteristics and precise steering feedback. I would say Dzire is slightly better when it comes to handling, and Etios slightly better on ride comfort.

Going by the price, the base models of the two cars are prices Rs. 25,000 apart which is not a major difference, but the price difference of the top end variants is as large as Rs. 85,000 ex-showroom. This makes Swift Dzire a more lucrative offering. However, Etios Petrol offers Safety features like ABD and Airbags right from the base variant which Swift Dzire offers only on top end variant (only ABS on VXi Automatic only), which makes Etios a safer car in terms of safety features.

However, the Swift offers much better looks and features at lower prices. Even if you compare the price of the top end Zxi with the GSP with safety package, the Dzire comes out to be a much better value for money. What I find slightly weird is the pricing of VXi automatic is way too high compared to the VXi MT. The only two differences are the Automatic transmission and ABS. This difference of 1.22 Lakhs does seem bit too much, however this might be a strategic pricing as buyers looking for comfort may want to pay this premium.

For a more spacious and large luggage space car, Etios is a better choice but it comes at a higher price. However for a fun to drive, better looking and sporty car, Swift is a better pick. If you can manage with smaller boot space, then top end petrol Dzire ZXi is a complete package with full safety features.
