SUV Remains Drivable In Spite of Being Crushed
As you can see in the above YouTube video by Shantonil Nag, the crushed Mahindra XUV700 is still functional. It is successfully driven inside the service centre. This means that the car kept the essentials of the car (engine, steering wheel, and transmission) in running condition. However, it is likely that it was towed till it reached the service centre as it is not ideal to drive such a heavily crushed vehicle on the roads. Mahindra is likely to restore the beat-up car. The Mahindra XUV700 is based on a monocoque chassis. The crumple zones of the car are located in the front end. In this accident, the front end remained safe. However, the Mahindra XUV700 suffered heavy damage after a container truck tipped over and engulfed it.
The car’s pillars collapsed and the structure was crushed. It will be repaired with hammers, cutting, and welding the chassis. The repaired car will not be as safe as a new XUV700. It is to be noted that Mahindra XUV700 comes with a five-star safety rating. It also received the ‘Safer Choice’ award from Global NCAP crash tests. It is quite impressive that the roof of the car managed to withstand the truck’s weight and save the passengers. The reason for the accident is not clear yet. It highlights the importance of careful driving while overtaking heavy vehicles or when driving beside huge trucks. Quite often, many load-carrying vehicles carry more weight than safe.
