CNG powertrains seem to be the only feasible solution to tackle the astronomical fuel prices in India. The petrol prices in some cities have crossed the Rs 110 per litre mark already. The chances of it coming back to under Rs 100 per litre are almost negligible. Many automobile manufacturers offer only petrol engines with their products in India to comply with the emission norms. Hence, it becomes extremely challenging to own a petrol-powered car, especially for city use. The adoption of EVs is still quite some time away. Hence, there is a need to find a tangible solution in the meanwhile. CNG presents itself as one of the most feasible solutions without investing anything significant to convert the regular cars into CNG cars. The OEMs also don’t need to make significant enhancements to the engines.

CNG vs Fuel Prices in India
The price of petrol is not the only concern with the traditional powertrains. The customers have to suffer twice; first pay extra while filling up fuel, secondly, the mileage. The mileage of petrol cars is way less than the CNG cars. Hence, it makes sense to go for CNG-powered cars. The element of emissions is also needed to be taken into consideration. In times to come, the emission regulations are only going to get stricter. CNG has the added advantage of emitting way less pollution than petrol or diesel engines. Therefore, it might even become a necessity to switch to such vehicles. Luckily, the aftermarket installation is a relatively easy and inexpensive process.

Challenges With CNG Cars
There are quite a few challenges with the mass adoption of CNG cars too. First and foremost, the infrastructure is not in place for large scale usage. The big cities are the only places where sufficient CNG stations are installed. There too, one has to wait in the queue for a long time. Hence, people have to think twice before buying a CNG car. Secondly, the CNG cylinder in the boot of the car eats up almost all the luggage space of a regular car which is a practical issue. Thirdly, the power output of the same engine is lowered if driving on CNG compared to petrol or diesel. Hence, a spirited driving experience is something you’ll have to forgo if you wish to switch to CNG.
