Chevrolet Trax Compact SUV Officially Revealed– Will Rival EcoSport, Duster and XA-Alpha

During the Paris Motor Show of 2012, Chevrolet has officially reveled the Chevrolet Trax compact SUV which will feature 3 engine options, 2 petrol and 1 diesel with start-stop micro hybrid technology which will enable Trax to deliver a mileage of close to 20 KMPL. The Trax will be launched soon internationally and will also come to India probably in 2013-14.

Chevrolet India is not going to be a silent spectator for the upcoming Compact SUV trend picking up both in the developed as well as developing economies. The reason for popularity of compact form factor SUVs like the Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and upcoming Maruti XA-Alpha based SUVs is different for different economies. While the emerging markets like India, Brazil and China has emerging number of youth who want to own more powerful and spacious cars which are affordable as well, the developed economies are shifting to lighter and more compact SUVs which saves on fuel as the prices of fuel are probably at all time high globally! Chevrolet / General Motors has revealed its plans for the upcoming compact SUV called the Chevrolet Trax. Sometime back we shared with you some leaked pictures of a compact GM SUV, and it comes out to be Chevrolet Trax. The Trax is based on the Opel Mokka SUV which is sold in some of the Europe, USA and China.

Chevrolet Trax will be powered by a sub 2-litre displacement engine and will deliver high fuel economy with low CO2 emissions. The car will have two rows of seats for 5 passengers and will be a more of a crossoveror mini SUV which will have large luggage space behind the second row of seats. The Trax is already spotted testing in Brazil and it is schedules for launch in Europe by mid 2013. Gradually it will be introduced in over 140 markets, so it will be a big global product for Chevrolet / GM. At first glace, it looks similar to the Chevrolet Beat (Spark in US) which is a popular small car from Chevrolet. The space of compact SUVs has a huge potential as there are not man players on the global level who are offering products and with the trends in the car buying shifting, almost all car makers are making their moves to get to the market as quickly as possible with their affordable compact crossovers to gain the early-bird advantage. The Trax is expected to be priced between Rs. 8 Lakhs to Rs. 11 Lakhs in India.

As per the official information shared by Susan Docherty, President and MD of Chevrolet Europe, Trax will offer features which are usually offered in higher price segment cars, it will have toughness and space of SUV with muscular exteriors and aesthetics and will offer great value to the customers.

Stay tuned to us for more interesting updates on the hot compact SUV segment which is getting more and more interesting. From Indian market’s perspective, thee Duster seems to be the first one which will be launched around October 2012 followed by Ford EcoSport by Q1 or 2013. Maruti will also try to bring the compact based on XA-Alpha concept by mid 2013 which is likely to be followed by the Trax. We will keep you updates on the developments.

Trax has been spied testing in San Luis Potosi in Mexico recently without any camouflage. The car will launch soon in Mexico where it will be branded as Chevrolet Enjoy. This is a global compact SUV which will be launched in over 140 markets by GM.

The dimensions of the Trax compact SUV are : length = 4248 mm, width = 1776 mm, wheelbase = 2555mm. The engine options on the Trax will include 3 engines which are: a 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine, 1.6 litre petrol and 1.7 litre diesel unit which churn out peak power of 140 BHP, 115 BHP and 130 BHP respectively. The Trax will come with a choice of 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic transmission system.
