The plans of Ford re-entering India could rely heavily on four distinct cars – Endeavour, a mid-size Creta-rivalling SUV, Range pickup truck and Mach-E electric sports car. Speculation of Ford coming back has persisted for quite some time now. Nevertheless, recent patent filings by Ford, along with job vacancies, have intensified these rumours to a degree where it’s nearly undeniable that the American automaker will re-enter our market in the near future. Another patent was also filed for a mid-size SUV recently. It’s worth noting that while Ford has sold one production plant in India (located in Gujarat), it still retains ownership of the Chennai plant. Furthermore, the recruitment drive for the EV department’s R&D signals significant plans for the future.

The four cars that Ford could commence its second innings in our market with belong to three completely different segments. While we know that the Endeavour is a 7-seat off-roading SUV, the Mach-E will rival the likes of the Kia EV6 and the upcoming BYD Seal in our market, albeit it could command a premium over these. The third SUV will cater to the customers looking for a practical mid-size SUV. This segment is among the most crowded in our market. In fact, with its planned joint venture with Mahindra, an SUV in this space was already planned. It was internally codenamed CX757 and was based on the Mahindra XUV700. Unfortunately, the American carmaker quit our market shortly after those plans fell through. Finally, the fourth vehicle will be the Range pickup truck. It is one of the most renowned pickup trucks in the world.
