BYD Seal U Moose and Slalom Test

The moose test is one of the most recognized methods to judge the driving dynamics of any car

In this post, we take a look at the details of a classic moose test of the BYD Seal U. BYD is one of the biggest NEV (New Energy Vehicle) makers on the planet. In the last few years, it has expanded out of China to flood the international markets with affordable and latest electric and hybrid cars. In fact, we have seen its portfolio increase in India as well. Similarly, it sells tons of models across categories to cater to the needs of all sorts of car buyers. For now, let us take a look at how well the Seal U performed.

We are able to come across this post courtesy of km77.com on YouTube. The host has the EV on the testing track. For the first part, he conducts the Slalom Test. It entails the car being steered left and right between the obstacles placed at equal distances from each other. The time taken by a vehicle across the circuit is recorded. It managed to clock a time of 26.2 seconds with decent stability. This represents how nimble the car feels with constant steering inputs.

In the second part of the experiment, the famed Moose Test was performed. In this section, the vehicle is driven and manoeuvred around 3 cones at a time at high speeds. To begin with, the SUV was at 77 km/h while entering the test. However, the results were disastrous. The driver ended up hitting many cones and there was a total lack of stability. For the subsequent rounds, the EV was tested at multiple speeds. Finally, the successful attempt came at 74 km/h. Also, with more attempts, the tyres became warm which enhanced the grip and the traction control behaved much better. Overall, the EV demonstrated a decent performance.

My View

I appreciate these tests which bring out the sporty side of vehicles. Sure, one might not drive in this manner every day. Still, during emergency situations, such manoeuvres can be the difference between safety and fatality. Therefore, it becomes crucial to ascertain that a given vehicle has the capability to remain stable during such sudden incidents. That will validate how safe it is in real life. I shall keep an eye out for more such cases in times to come.
