As per the new ruling by Maharashtra Government, if a new two wheeler is bought, two helmets should be provided compulsorily with it.
Our government is working towards better safety of vehicles. Like in two-wheelers, CBS (Combi Braking System) has been made compulsory and for that above 150cc, they need to have ABS. In four-wheelers, there are a couple of safety features that are compulsory even in the most affordable car.
Now, the Maharashtra Government has announced that every new two wheeler registered, should be offered with two ISI marked helmets, compulsorily. That means if you bike a new scooter or a motorcycle, you will get two helmets free. But there’s a catch to it.
With this, the prices of scooters and motorcycles will then increase in the state of Maharashtra. A good ISI helmet from brands like Studds or Vega cost atleast Rs 700 to 800. Providing two with them will easily go up to Rs 1500 and more.

The court had earlier directed to make this action compulsorily, however it was not followed. Now, the Nagpur High Court Bench has directed the transport committee to look further in this case, if not followed, the registration of two-wheelers could be banned.
The government has also instructed all two-wheeler manufacturers about this. The exact date of commencement has not been revealed but mostly, the plan will be effective at the earliest. Soon, we will also receive intimidation about the price hike from the manufacturers.
In the past couple of years, the two-wheeler accidents have been increasing. The primary reason for these includes damaged roads, potholes, over speeding and drunk driving. Over 1.5 Lakh people die every year due to road accidents and nearly 30-35% of them are two-wheeler accidents.

As of now, this policy has only come up in Maharashtra. Many social activists are working towards the implementation of this in other states as well. Among all, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu register the highest number of road accidents.
