Maruti Suzuki pulled the S-Cross off the shelves earlier this year as its sole diesel engine was discontinued but now its set to make a comeback with a new BS6 petrol engine. The launch is on July 29.
After an action packed week of new car launches, there’s still some left for this month. Maruti Suzuki have announced the launch of the BS6 S-Cross Petrol to be on July 29. Maruti Suzuki had discontinued the S-Cross earlier this year as we stepped into the BS6 era as the S-Cross was solely available with a diesel engine. With Maruti Suzuki discontinuing their diesel engines altogether, the S-Cross was pulled off the shelves. However, it is now all set to make a comeback with a new BS6 complaint petrol heart.
The S-Cross was previously powered by Fiat’s 1.3L diesel engine which is also known as the ‘national engine of India’. The same engine also powered the Vitara Brezza but it was not updated to comply with the BS6 emission norms and was thus discontinued. In place of the diesel engine, there will be a new 1.5L petrol engine powering the S-Cross and going ahead, the S-Cross will be a petrol-only model. The same treatment was also meted out to the Vitara Brezza with the replacement of the same diesel engine with this new 1.5L petrol engine.
The new BS6 Maruti Suzuki S-Cross petrol will be powered by a BS6 complaint 1.5L, four-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 105hp and 138Nm of peak torque. Having ditched the diesel engine, the S-Cross will definitely lose out on its efficiency and torquey nature. However, to compensate for that, Maruti Suzuki will be offering their Smart-Hybrid system on the S-Cross just as they do for the brezza. The system comes with the functionality of torque-boost and idle start-stop which should help the S-Cross retain some of its appeal.

The BS4 S-Cross only had the option of 5-speed manual gearbox. However, with this new engine, Maruti Suzuki will offer a 5-speed manual gearbox along with the option of 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox as well. The mild-hybrid tech mentioned above will however only be offered on the automatic variants of the S-Cross and the automatic gearbox will be offered on all trims of the S-Cross except for the base trim. There will be a total of four variants on offer – Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha.

Apart from the change of heart, there will be no other changes on the S-Cross inside and out. The S-Cross is anyway nearing the end of its lifecycle and will most likely be replaced by a new mid-size SUV that will be derived from the Futuro-e concept shown at the 2020 Auto Expo. Prices for the BS6 Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Petrol are expected to be in the Rs 8.5-11.5 lakh region. In comparison, the S-Cross diesel was priced from Rs 8.81 Lakhs, going up to Rs 11.44 Lakhs.
