With the BS6 update, Hyundai has switched the 1.4L diesel engine in the Venue with a larger 1.5 liter diesel engine with 100bhp from the Kia Seltos. That’s a 10bhp bump in power for the Venue.
We have already reported to you that the BS6 Hyundai Venue will be getting a new 1.5 liter diesel engine in place of its BS4-spec 1.4 liter diesel engine. Now this 1.5 liter diesel engine already powers the Kia Seltos and will soon also be powering the Hyundai Creta. However, for the Venue, it will come in a de-tuned state. We now have the confirmed horsepower figure of this 1.5 liter diesel engine in the Hyundai Venue and that is 100 bhp.
Interestingly, the Venue diesel sees an increase in power in its shift from BS4 to BS6 compliance. The older 1.4 liter diesel engine produced 90bhp – that’s a 10bhp jump in power for the Venue. In the Seltos and the Creta, the 1.5L diesel engine however produces 115 bhp. In these bigger SUVs, the engine uses a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), while in the case of the Venue, the engine will come with a fixed geometry turbo (FGT). This is how the difference in power is reflected with the Venue seeing a 15hp drop from the Seltos and Creta at 100hp.
While we do not have the torque output for the 1.5-litre diesel with the FGT, we expect it to match the BS4 1.4-litre diesel unit’s 220Nm figure. The engine will still come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. With its BS6 update, the diesel engine in the Venue is now at par with that of the Ford Ecosport. However, its still under-powered by quite some margin when compared with the diesel engines of the Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV300.

The Mahindra XUV300 is still the segment leader producing the highest power and torque figures from its 1.5 liter diesel engine. In fact, with the Venue now getting a bigger engine, all SUVs in this category and now powered by 1.5 liter four-cylinder diesel engines, albeit with power and torque outputs. That’s excluding the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza as it has completely lost its diesel heart.

What’ll be interesting to see is how ARAI fuel efficiency figures will change for the Venue; the BS4 diesel is rated at 23.7kpl. After the Venue, this 100hp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel FGT unit is expected to be found under the hood of the Verna facelift, the next-gen i20, and the Kia Sonet.
