As new and new products are being launched internationally, the concern for fuel efficiency and emissions is growing. Although petrol and diesel cars have no competition with hybrid vehicles in terms of efficiency and emissions, automakers are stressing a lot on developing new engines. BMW is a popular brand and is known for its twin turbo technology which is offered with many of its products.
The company recently launched the BMW X3 SUV in India with two engine options: a 2 litre diesel and a 3 litre diesel engine, and skipped the petrol engine for our market. On the global front the car is available with a 3 litre in-line 6 cylinder petrol engine and interestingly it is soon going to replace the same by a new unit.

As per the latest information BMW is all set to replace the 3 litre in-line 6 cylinder engine with a twin turbo petrol unit. Evidently the twin turbo technology offers power, fuel economy and lower emissions at the same time and this is what justifies BMW’s replacement step. From now onwards the BMW xDrive28i model will feature the N20 Twin Turbo 2 litre petrol engine that produces 245 BHP of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque.

The engine will be mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission which also contributes to better fuel efficiency. The twin turbo technology and the automatic gearbox together deliver a claimed fuel economy of 13 KMPL, which is appreciable enough. Apart from the N20, the N55 3 litre, 300 BHP & 410 Nm twin turbo petrol unit will continue to feature on the top end X3.
Since the twin turbo technology’s introduction, the company has been steadily switching to turbocharged configuration and in fact most of the top manufacturers are doing or have done so.
