BMW has introduced tasteful cosmetic changes and much more tech on the new 5-Series and the 6-Series Gran Tourismo facelift. There are two new plug-in hybrid variants for the 5-Series as well.
After teasing the all-new 5-Series about a week ago, BMW has now revealed the 2020 5-Series facelift. This update comes as a mid-life facelift for 5-series which essentially includes some tasteful cosmetic changes and a lot of clever tech on board as well. Along with the 5-Series, BMW has also updated the 6-Series Gran Tourismo which packs in a similar set of updates like the 5-Series.
We had already revealed to you the design details of the updated 5-Series from spy shots and teaser images earlier. The 2020 BMW 5-Series and the 6-Series Gran Tourismo get a new grille which are adorned by redesigned LED headlamps which are now slimmer than before. Thankfully the grille has not grown alarmingly large and are still well-proportioned with the rest of the car.
The side profile remains more or less identical for both the car but at rear, there are new LED tail lamps. Both car also get new bumpers with different designs for the various trim options. The cars pictured here are equipped with the M Sport Package. What’s also new are the wheels. BMW is offering various wheel designs ranging from 18- to 20-inches along with new 20-inch BMW Air Performance Wheels as an option.
The interiors of both the cars however remain relatively unchanged. You get the familiar 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central infotainment system screens just like the pre-facelift car but there are two new cabin trim options with gloss black inserts. Where BMW has really upped the game is in the tech they offer on both the cars. There’s a new active navigation system with lane departure warning and lane change assist. There’s also an optional parking assist with additional reversing assist function.

Another novel feature on the new BMW 5-Series and 6-Series Gran Coupe is the new BMW drive recorder which records up to 40 seconds of video footage from points around the vehicle. The operating system for the infotainment system has also been updated and it now features increased connectivity and application support. Both cars are now also capable of receiving OTA updates.

With this update, BMW has also introduced two new 48V plug-in hybrid variants on the 5-Series. These plug-in hybrid variants are known as the 530e and 545e where the petrol engine comes mated to a synchronous electric motor. In India however, BMW is expected to retain the current powertrain options that we already have on sale. That includes the 530i, the 520d, and the 530d variants. No plug-in hybrid variants have however been introduced for the 6-Series GT. In India, BMW retails three variants of the 6-Series GT – 620d, 630d and 630i variants. Both cars are also offered with BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. These cosmetic and changes and new tech will also be offered on the M5 very soon. Expect the 5-Series and 6-Series Gran Tourismo facelift to make it to India by end of 2020.
