BMW Motorrad is preparing to launch the G 310 R in India early next year. The bike will be locally produced and will become their cheapest offering in the country. One of its direct rivals will be the KTM Duke 390, which is quite a popular bike in its segment. Like the KTM, the upcoming BMW bike should be cost effective considering it will be manufactured locally at TVS’ Hosur facility. BMW G 310R Estimated Price | 2017 KTM 390 Duke Ex-Showroom Delhi Price |
Rs. 2.5 lakhs | Rs. 2.26 lakh |
Even though the BMW G 310R will be made in India, it is unlikely to be cheaper than the Duke 390. According to our estimates, BMW’s entry level bike will cost about Rs. 2.5 lakh ex-showroom. The KTM, available in only one variant, costs Rs. 2.26 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Although the launch of the 2017 model Duke 390 has led to a price increase, we doubt BMW will price the G310R under 2.3 lakhs. The only thing working in BMW’s favour here will be the brand image.

In terms of specifications, the KTM 390 Duke holds a significant advantage over the BMW G 310R. KTM’s engine is bigger in terms of displacement and boasts higher power and torque figures. It will also be faster than the BMW to the 60 km/h mark. Both bikes feature front and rear disc brakes and a similar suspension setup. The G 310R’s mileage could be marginally better than the Duke’s.

BMW G 310 R vs KTM 390 Duke – Design & Features
When it comes to styling, the two bikes get a distinctive look giving each of them an identity of their own. However, in terms of pure eyeball grabbing ability, we doubt the BMW will be able to match the KTM. Duke 390 gets KTM’s signature edgy styling with flashy colours, which makes its stand out from the crowd. The BMW, on the other hand, is not that aggressive, but looks sufficiently pretty nonetheless.
The new 2017 KTM Duke 390 looks even more aggressive. Both bikes feature black alloy wheels, LED tail lamps, pilot lamp, digital speedo and more. KTM offers the Duke 390 in only two colours – black and white. Expect BMW to offer 3-4 colour option for the G 310R.
BMW G 310 R vs KTM 390 Duke – Verdict
- Design – Looks are a matter of personal taste, but the KTM Duke 390 is the more striking looking bike of the two.
- Specifications – In terms of specifications, the KTM edges ahead thanks to better power and torque figures and better acceleration as well.
- Price – We’re not expecting BMW G 310R to undercut the KTM Duke 390’s price. In fact, it will, in all probability, be more expensive at around INR 2.5 lakhs.
