BMW Motorrad, the Motorcycle brand of German auto major BMW has selected the India Hero motors as its supplier for Motorcycle transmission gearboxes. Hero Motors is the motorcycle major in India with their Hero Honda Joint venture which has recently split into Hero Group retaining the major stake in the company. This contract is a major win for the company not only in financial terms, but also in terms of the establishing its technological expertise as an auto parts maker. Gearbox or transmission is a crucial component for a motorcycle and largely affects the performance and quality of ride. The BMW bikes are known for their masculine powerful nature, these are performance packed bikes.
Hero Motors gearboxes will be used for the global models and there is a five to eight years contract on supplying the gearboxes to BMW in its Germany plant.
Speaking on this contract, Mr Pankaj Munjal the MD of Hero Motors quoted:
We have developed the gearbox ourselves. Usually, components such as engines and transmissions are made by the company itself, as they involve advanced technology. We have achieved the expertise. BMW Motorrad will source gearboxes from us for products it sells globally. Europe is the best place for sourcing automobile components is not necessarily correct. The landscape is changing. Our transmission business, for one, has been growing over 70 per cent a year for the last few years
