BMW Reveals 518d, 520d With New 2.0-litre Engine

BMW has revealed the 518d and 520d with a new 2-litre diesel engine (B47), this is one of the major changes made for the 2015 BMW 5-series range. The new generation four-cylinder diesel engine introduced with the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology increases the power output, besides reducing the fuel consumption.The 518d and its touring model have been added as the new entry level model to the 5-Series range, the sedan variant may be offered in India in the future. BMW has not stated when, or if, the new engine will be introduced in India.

With the introduction of new engine, BMW claims to deliver more power, better fuel consumption and speed in its 5-series range. With the new engine, the BMW 520d produces 190 BHP @ 4,000 RPM and 400 Nm @1750 – 2500 RPM. The 520d has an average fuel-consumption of 4.1 litre/100 Km (24.39 KMPL) in the European cycle.

The 518d on the other hand gets the same engine in a lower state of tuning, producing 150 BHP @ 4,000 RPM and 360 Nm @ 1750 – 2500 RPM. It has an average fuel-consumption figure of 4.2 litre/100 Km (23.8 KMPL) in the European cycle.

Both the engines can be paired with either a revised 8-speed automatic or the new 6-speed manual gear box.

Its not all about fuel-efficiency though, the increase in power has also helped increase the cars’ performance. The 520d now accelerates from 0-100 KMPH in 7.9-seconds when coupled to the 6-speed manual transmission, while it takes 7.7 seconds to do the same with the 8-speed automatic transmission.
