The BMW 5 series facelift gets a completely new face with addition of features to the interiors as well. It will also get a new plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The BMW 5 series has always struck the best of both worlds – sporty underpinnings while being luxurious still – and it has been great in pulling off that dual nature. Now, a fresh set of spy images have surfaced on the internet of the upcoming BMW 5 series facelift. Interestingly, the test mule was also sporting a ‘Hybrid Test Vehicle’ sticker on the door. There was also an eDrive badge on the C-pillar, confirming the hybrid setup of the vehicle.
The front and rear of the car are well camouflaged but if you look closely, you can still make out the shape of the new headlamps. The LED DRLs look in line with the ones on the current G20 3 series. The grille and the front bumper were heavily covered, making it a little difficult to speculate the design. The iconic kidney grille certainly seems to have grown larger like all new BMWs but how it really looks with the rest of the design, we will only know when the wraps are takes off.
At the rear, the tail lamps have also been redesigned and from how the camouflage wraps itself around the rear bumpers, to too seem to have been redesigned. The spotted test mule seems to be an M Sport version with the blue brake callipers and M badging on the fenders. The blacked out wheels and the dark window surrounds also suggests the same.

There were no shots of the BMW 5 series facelift interiors but we are expecting a fully digital instrument cluster and latest iDrive system. There are also rumors about a new 545e variant which will borrow its powertrain from the 745e. The current 530e plug-in hybrid uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine along with an electric motor, with 46 km of electric only range. The electric motor with the 9.2kWh lithium-ion battery along with the engine produce a combined out of 248PS and 420Nm of torque, sprinting from 0-100kmph in 6.2 seconds.

Chances are that the plug-in hybrid variant of the BMW 5 series facelift will most likely not make it to India. However, it will make its global debut by 2020. The current 5 Series in India is priced from Rs 58.70 lakh – 66.20 lakh.
