The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will follow the 4 Series coupe that will be unveiled by the end of this year and it will get a wide range of engine options.
The current-gen BMW 4 series has been on the roads for quite a long time, seven years to be precise. Lately, BMW was spotted testing the new-gen 4 series both on public roads and on the Nurburgring as well. Now however, its four-door sibling, the BMW 4 series Gran Coupe has been spotted testing for the first time on public roads.
Although the car was wrapped heavily in camouflage, the look of the car resembled the upcoming all-electric i4 sedan very closely. That is because both cars are underpinned by the CLAR modular architecture which can support regular gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid and even all-electric powertrains. That aside, apart from the four doors, the 4 series Gran Coupe gets similar design cues from its convertible and coupe siblings, most noticeably the large kidney grille.
There are not much technical details about the BMW 4 series Gran Coupe yet, but we expect it to carry over the powertrains from the 430i and M440i and then of course, an M4 will follow. The interiors and features are expected to be laid out similar to the G20 3 Series.

The 430i currently uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that puts out 248PS of power and 350Nm of torque. As for the BMW M440i, it uses a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine which produces 320PS and 447Nm of torque. Also there are rumours that the 4 Series Gran Coupe might use the same engine from the upcoming M4 along with a separate plug-in hybrid variant on the cards as well. The M4 will use a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six petrol engine which puts out 473PS and, wait for it, will get a manual gearbox as well. The 4 Series Gran Coupe will however come mated to a 8-speed automatic.

BMW previewed the Concept 4 at this year’s Frankfurt Show and that essentially gives us a hint of how the next-gen 4 series coupe could look like, sans that grille perhaps. It is expected to make its debut later this year. While there has been no word on the 4 Series Gran Coupe will make its debut, expect it to arrive some time after the debut of its coupe sibling.
