In a bid to add sport quotient and appeal to the 1-Series, BMW has launched the BMW 1-Series M Performance Edition in India with visual enhancements to the luxury hatchback. Though the M badge is the most sought after property in the market only 111 units of the 1-Series M performance edition will be produced and will be available at the BMW dealerships till July 25, 2014.
The limited edition gets a handful of exterior updates such as a black front grill, performance rear spoiler with fins, BMW M aerodynamics, performance racing stripes and M Performance lettering on the exteriors. However, cosmetic facelift apart, no mechanical changes have been made to the vehicle.

Apart from the visual enhancements, there have been no changes made to the powertrain. Available with petrol and diesel engine options, the BMW 1-Series is powered by a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder petrol unit producing 136 BHP of power and 220 Nm of torque, while the diesel variant uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine producing 143 BHP and 320 Nm of torque. 0-100 km/hr comes up in 8.7 seconds on the petrol version and takes just 0.1 second lesser on the diesel powered model.
BMW has strategically launched the M performance edition for the 1-Series in competition with Mercedes A-Class Edition 1 version, which was launched earlier this month. Now both the hatchbacks offer a whole lot of updates and additional features that made the hatchback a compelling buy in the segment. Launched in September 2013, the BMW 1-Series completes 10 months of sales and has been doing moderately well for BMW India. The 1-Series M Performance edition will help the automaker generate more short term sales, while keeping the model popular in the segment rivaling against Mercedes A-Class, Volvo V40 Cross Country and the upcoming Audi A3.
We will keep you posted with further developments on this until then, do let us know what you think of the sporty hatchback!
