The Indigenous car safety testing watchdog is coming up with innovative ideas to make the general buyer aware of the safety prowess of his/her vehicle
Cars will soon start getting a Bharat NCAP safety rating display sticker. It will be available with a QR code which anyone can scan to get full details of any car. I feel this is a great initiative by the Indian safety agency to raise awareness among the general public about the safety capabilities of their vehicles. We know how crucial this aspect has become in India, particularly in the last few years. People take into consideration the safety rating of a car prior to making the final call as to which model to opt for. Hence, carmakers have become serious about this aspect.
Bharat NCAP Safety Rating Display Sticker
As per the details about this measure, Bharat NCAP will send OR code stickers to the automobile manufacturers whose vehicles have undergone crash tests. The name of the manufacturer, vehicle, model, testing date and safety ratings for both adults and children will be available on this sticker. Furthermore, anyone can scan this QR code to get a detailed crash test report of the vehicle in question. This gives the power to the regular folks to enable them to make an informed decision. Also, this will ensure that complete transparency is maintained throughout this process.
Bharat NCAP was introduced in India last year. It is a volunteer process where car companies can send their models for testing. It is based on the updated Global NCAP protocols. Once tested, the safety watchdog will award safety ratings for Adult and Child occupants. With this, the buyers can make up their minds about whether they want to buy a specific car model or not. Until now, Tata Harrier, Safari, Nexon EV and Punch EV have been tested. In fact, MoRTH Minister Nitin Gadkari mentioned that Bharat NCAP has already received over 30 requests for crash tests from various car marques. With time, these tests will be conducted and the results will be announced.
My View
I am of the opinion that we need such measures to raise awareness about this critical aspect. In our country, many customers don’t know the importance of having a car with high safety ratings. Unfortunately, India is home to hundreds of thousands of car crashes each year where lakhs of lives are lost. Many of them could have been minimised in terms of damage simply if the safety equipment was on offer or vehicles had high safety ratings. Sure, it is not a substitute for safe driving. Still, it is better to meet with an accident in a car with a high NCAP score. I believe such steps will enhance the safety standards across the board.
