1. Maruti Alto [1,15,875]
Since the beginning of 2015, the Maruti Alto 800 and Alto K10 together have managed to clock 1,15,875 units overall making it the highest selling car in India. The Alto has been the leading the sales charts for some years now but was dethroned by the Maruti Swift Dzire as the highest selling car in India for the month of June 2015. A combination of value for money and trust in the Maruti brand name are the primary reasons why this car sells so much. Plus, the 800 and the K10 variants are able to cater to a wide range of customers with different budgets and preferences.

2. Maruti Swift Dzire [94,901]
Maruti’s compact sedan might not be the prettiest or the roomiest compact sedan around, but it is, by miles, the largest selling in its segment. It manages to outsell the Alto quite frequently in terms of monthly sales. The recent facelift and addition to the features list have also helped the Dzire to maintain demand. The high sales of the Maruti Swift Dzire can be attributed to the pricing, brand name and strong brand value of the Dzire name. Plus, at just around 50,000 more than the Swift hatchback, most Indian buyers seem to give preference to the sedan; ‘badi gaadi’ mentality.
- Price: INR 5.08-7.82 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi)
- Competition: Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest

But it has been losing out to its sedan derivative off late thanks to the narrow price gap between the two. Through constant updates, Maruti has managed to keep the product fresh and hence, keep buyers interested in the Wagon R over the years. Plus, at this price point there really aren’t many other options with the Hyundai Santro now discontinued and the i10 and the Chevrolet Beat, both more expensive than the Wagon R. As is the case with most of the cars on this list, it is the Maruti brand name that has been a crucial in driving sales further.

And the introduction of the i20 Active has undoubtedly helped things a lot. Plus, Hyundai’s rock solid aftersales and support is second only to Maruti’s.
