At the front, there is an entire bumper assembly from the popular off-roading component manufacturer, Rival which includes a rugged dual skid plate set up for under-body protection, the inclusion of a lot of auxiliary LED lights on the bumpers and on the roof, a functional snorkel for when the vehicle goes underwater. Down the sides, there is a functional and useful sidestep to enhance the ingress and egress characteristics of the pickup truck.

In addition, the side profile is particularly attractive due to the colossal 20-inch alloy wheels with hard-core off-roading tyres which extend out of the body. Chunky wheel arches neatly cover them offering a rugged look. Then there is a roll cage in the cargo compartment and additional tools like a shovel. There are tow hooks at the front and rear to pull it out of any predicament. However, we think that it will find application in pulling other vehicles out of tough situations and not the other way around.

The Hilux shares the same 2.7-litre diesel engine with the Fortuner. It produces 201 hp and 420 Nm of torque (500 Nm with automatic transmission) of peak power and torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. All Hilux variants come with 4-wheel-drive as standard. There is no petrol engine option like the Fortuner. The prices of the Hilux start at Rs 33.99 lakh and go up to Rs 36.80 lakh, ex-showroom.
