The Dominar 400 debuted as the Pulsar CS400 back at the 2014 Auto Expo. A couple of name changes later, the production-ready form of the Bajaj Pulsar CS400 was launched in December 2016. Dubbed as the Dominar 400, the new motorcycle is the first of many upcoming high-performance bikes by Bajaj. The Dominar 400 is Bajaj’s most powerful and most expensive bike yet. One of the segment rivals is its own cousin, the KTM Duke 390, which has just been given a major update. Both bikes are being manufactured at Bajaj’s facility in Chakan, near Pune. Bajaj has priced the new Dominar 400 much lower than the 390 Duke. With the launch of the new model, the price of the 390 Duke has gone up. Prices for the Dominar start at just Rs 1.36 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Currently, the 2017 KTM 390 Duke retails for Rs. 2.26 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

While both bikes share the same single cylinder engine, the power and torque figures are different. The engine has been re-tuned to suit the cruiser nature of the Dominar 400. Power delivery is less urgent in comparison to the 390 Duke. Also, both bikes get a slipper clutch. The 373cc single cylinder unit that powers the Duke now makes 43.5 PS and 37 Nm.

The new 2017 KTM 390 Duke features a very eye-catching design. It flashy colour scheme, sharp lines and minimal bodywork make it instantly recognisable as a KTM product. The design of the Bajaj Dominar 400 seems to have drawn inspiration from the likes of the Ducati XDiavel. It features a nice clean design devoid of any body graphics. Both bikes get a full-LED headlight, LED tail light and LED turn indicators. Additionally, the Duke 390 features a new customizable LCD display.
The new KTM Duke 390 looks even more aggressive. As far as the list of features is concerned both bikes get black alloy wheels, LED tail lamps, pilot lamp, digital speedo and more. Duke 390 comes in only two colours – black and white. Bajaj offers 3 colour options for the Dominar. Although the two bikes share the same heart, when it comes to styling, they simply can’t be compared.

Bajaj is targeting a different customer base with the =Dominar 400. While the KTM 390 Duke is for those looking for performance, the Dominar 400 targets buyers looking for a long distance cruiser.

- Specifications – While both bikes share the same engine, Bajaj Dominar 400’s power and torque figures are lower. It has been tuned keeping the bike’s cruiser nature in mind. Expect the Dominar 400 to be more fuel efficient.
- Price – The Bajaj Dominar 400 costs much less than the KTM 390 Duke. There is a price difference of around seventy six thousand Rupees between the ABS variant of the Dominar and the Duke 390.
