Anand Mahindra Tweets at Nitin Gadkari
This post reads, “What an idea. I’m sure @nitin_gadkari ji can make our highways ‘sing’ as well. Now the only tough choice will be WHICH song or music should play when at the right speed… I would imagine it would have to change from state to state!” With this text, a video has been attached. As per the information, this is from Hungary where the engineers have created a musical road. There are markings on the side of the highway which create sound if the driver drives on it at a controlled speed. One could even hear it in the video.

This is quite an interesting way to encourage people to drive within the speed limit. Nitin Gadkari is known for making bold and ambitious decisions. He is quite passionate about the infrastructure he is developing in the country. This includes things like high mountain roads to make sure that the residents of the far-flung reaches of the Himalayas get access to a proper road or be vocal and active about electrification and alternate sources of fuels going forward. Being the Minister of Road, Transport and Highway in India, he takes this job very seriously.

What We Think
We welcome the idea. There are thousands of road accidents in our country each year. Most of these happen due to overspeeding. If such creative solutions are attempted, the drivers might be more willing to comply. On the other end of the spectrum, one could also argue that this could cause distraction as well. Since these markings are on the side of the highway, it is possible that drivers try to forcefully drive on it crossing lanes suddenly in the process. Therefore, the authorities have to take care of all these aspects before attempting something like this.
