The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has found the best quality Lithium reserves in J&K which will prove to be a massive boon to the EV sector going forward.
In a recent development, Anand Mahindra reacted to the discovery of Lithium reserves in J&K. The process of the survey was underway for the past 2 years in the mountain state and the results are extremely positive. Lithium is the main component of the battery of electric cars. The future of the automobile industry is clearly looking like it is heading toward electrification. However, there are a few critical challenges that are preventing mass adoption. Nevertheless, the transformation is rapid. This Lithium reserve discovery will mark India’s presence on a global scale as there are only a handful of locations of Lithium reserves across the world.

Quality of Lithium
As per the latest reports about this reserve, the Lithium found here is the best quality. While the standard grade of Lithium found elsewhere is around 220 parts per million (PPM), the one found in J&K is over 500 PPM. The total stockpile is a massive 5.9 million tons which is more than China’s. This discovery took place in the Reasi district of J&K in the foothills of the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Salal village. This survey was a part of the G3 level study and the G2 and G1 level study will follow soon. Thereafter, the excavation process would be started.

Local Employment
The locals are very excited about this finding as the Government’s initiatives always prefer the local youth to carry out the job. The large-scale excavation project is bound to employ a lot of local labour creating huge employment for the residents. Currently, India has to import 100% of Lithium for EVs and solar panels but that will change drastically with this development. What are your thoughts on this?
